"Therapeutic riding has known benefits for individuals with cognitive, physical and mental disabilities; ADD/ADHD, Autism (ASD), speech impairments, Aspergers Syndrome, cerebral palsy and sensory issues to name a few. "
North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).
CTREE is a not-for-profit (501c3) organization located on the eastern end of Long Island, New York. We are a member center of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).
Our mission at CTREE is to provide therapeutic horseback riding lessons and equine assisted activities for children and young adults with developmental disabilities. Our program is focused on individuals with special cognitive or learning needs including Autism, ADHD/ADD, sensory issues and developmental delays. Safety and well-being are the foundations of all CTREE lessons.
The unique three-dimensional movement of a horse is the foundation of every therapeutic riding lesson. Exercises incorporating changes of gait, postural positioning and direction stimulate systems of the rider such as visual, motor and vestibular systems. Equine assisted activities such as grooming and tacking promote emotional well-being and social bonding.
Therapeutic riding is taught by a certified therapeutic riding instructor and does not require a physicians prescription. With the participation of parents, caregivers and educators, each rider's needs are evaluated to assess whether CTREE can safely and effectively meet their needs. If we can not, we refer them to another program.
CTREE lessons follow the NARHA guidelines and are taught by NARHA certified instructors. We emphasize safety first. Our horses and volunteer staff are specially trained and our equipment excedes regulatory standards.
CTREE currently has two NARHA certified instructors, several specially trained therapy horses, and a growing volunteer base. All CTREE lessons are held at Wolffer Estate Stables on Narrow Lane in Sagaponack.
